Feeding your family on quality, fresh, ethically raised local food often means an extra trip into town to a Farmers Market. When you want to spend more time doing your hobbies and relaxing at home that is the last thing you want to do every week.

I hate going shopping for anything. Online shopping for things like clothes & shoes is easy enough if you stick to certain brands once you know your sizing. I really do have difficulty trusting someone else with my grocery shopping though.

Living in the middle of nowhere really forced me to make sure my freezer is fully stocked. There is nothing worse than having to brave the winter weather, or waste your summer to go into town to get food in.

Not everyone is as lucky (or as crazy) as we are. In 2004 Carl and I moved to Canada because it offered us better lifestyle opportunities. After 6 years in Manitoba we got chance to move to an acreage in Saskatchewan and we jumped at it. We really wanted to raise our own food and live the good life.

Moving to a new country is a wonderful adventure but sometimes we just miss comfort foods from the UK like Pork Roasts with Crackling, English Bacon and Cumberland Sausages. Carl and I both worked in the meat industry for over 20 years so we knew exactly what we needed to do to recreate our favourite foods. Old Fashioned roasts that are plain and simple meat with fat. Chops that have a bone in and fat! Breakfast sausages with no sugar or garlic. Just simple little things that take us back home without the air fare.

We chose to raise Rare breed Berkshire pigs that can have a happy free range life living on Pasture in Saskatchewan. (This means our vision of the good life had to forfeit the vegetable plot - they always break in just before harvest time!) We know what they eat and how they live so we know they aren’t fed on unnecessary anti-biotics or crammed into small living spaces.

“Real food doesn’t have ingredients. Real Food is ingredients!” (Jamie Oliver)
