Is your freezer where good food goes to die? This storage solution is a game changer!

When it comes to food storage, are you Team Canning or Team Freezing?

An unorganized freezer is the best place to send your food to die! The whole point of using a freezer is to store and not waste food - especially with all the rising prices we are dealing with these days.

Canning definitely has a visual advantage. Although it is huge here in Canada, I am still Team Freezing.

It is what we are used to back home, and while I do "can" a small amount of food, it takes longer than freezing, which is usually just a small side step from the stove rather than hours of setting up and prepping for canning.

With freezing temperatures right around the corner, it's a mad dash to store all the garden stuff for winter. This year - and I know I'm not alone - my freezer was a tad disorganized, and I had a glut of pork fat and bones that I had been putting off dealing with.

While making lard and pork stock is easy and, routinely, fits into my day, finding the right containers to freeze pork stock in sometimes does my head in! 🤯

Jars work great in the freezer, but I never remember to take them out, and they take ages to defrost; and being glass, you can't speed that up!

Bags - if you don't freeze them flat, they are bulky and misshapen, plus I usually end up putting all the stock in a massive bag, which is always far more than I need. This is ok, but then you have to figure out what else you're going to make to use it up.

Life Changing Freezer Storage

I just recently came across Souper cubes, and these have been life-changing.

They are like ice cube trays but come in different portion sizes, and once your food is frozen, you pop it out of the silicone mould and put it in freezer bags - I managed to get 8 portions in a Ziploc bag, and then you can reuse the bag.

Ok, so I'm still sorting my freezer out and not doing pics for Pinterest, but this should give you an idea of what the freezer cubes come out like. Perfect portions!

The trays come in 2 cup, 1 cup, 1/2 cup and 2 Tbsp sizes, with each tray also having a mark halfway...if that makes sense, so the 2 cup also has a halfway line for 1 cup, and the others all have halfway marks.

I have also got ahead on gravy and sauce making - instead of just making stock and freezing it - I made it straight into gravy, plus some favourites from back home - Chinese chip shop gravy, Chinese chip shop curry sauce, plus a butter chicken sauce and some cheese sauce.

The best part about souper-cubing - especially if you're the only cook in the house and you don't eat out much is that you can have more ready-made choices for when you need a night off!

In just a couple of weeks, I have already made and frozen so many things just as part of my daily routine:

  • Ginger garlic cubes,

  • Apple Juice

  • Shepherd's pie,

  • Cauliflower cheese

  • Basmati Rice

  • Jasmin Rice

  • Mashed Potatoes

  • Doner kebab meat

  • Chicken Gravy

  • Tomato Sauce

  • Chinese Chip Shop Gravy

  • Butter Chicken Sauce

  • Celery Soup

  • Chinese Chip Shop Curry Sauce

I hope this gives you some inspiration to get your freezer organized for winter and save yourself some future headaches!
