About us

Welcome to our crazy adventure at Cobblestone Farm where we raise the best-tasting pork in one of the harshest climates in Canada! Our customers say so!

We didn't start out here in Canada, we are a couple of Brits from the North Of England.

My name is Joanna and I met my husband Carl in the least romantic place - a slaughterhouse where we both worked.

After years of working together, we finally got together when Carl was between homes and I looked after his dog, Biff.

Every day he would come round to take Biff for a walk conveniently at tea time, so I started feeding him - you know what they say about feeding strays - you can't get rid of them lol.

After a whirlwind romance, we got married - just because I like cake and wanted a party and a new dress!

We wanted to do something different with our lives and decided to try and move to Canada.

There were lots of hoops to jump through. I rang around every kill plant in Manitoba until I found one that would hire us, then we had to apply for work permits - which are not easy to get - it was a nightmare but we did it.

When we moved here everything seemed so big - the grocery stores were huge and it was all new and exciting.

Then I got a real wake-up call!

I bought - what I thought was chicken breast - what the hell was that stuff?

It was jellified!

I had no idea they pumped water into it! I had worked in butcher shops and for a large meat company back home and I have never seen such a thing.

  • Then I couldn't find lard!

  • The beef had no flavour!

  • Don't even get me started on the pigs that came through the kill plant we worked out - they were called barn cleanouts - ones that the big processors won't take. That's when we stopped eating pork!

Something had to change - I didsn’t realize the food would taste so different. I really wanted to get back to the land and grow our own food and eat proper food again.

I grew up on a livestock farm in the UK and the veg my dad grew in the garden was soo good!

He ran a small shooting syndicate on the farm and on shoot days everyone got to take home a brace (pair) of birds. Dad kept the rest - so we grew up eating a lot of pheasant and duck.

Real unprocessed food!

I just wasn’t used to mass-produced food that had no flavour - and worse I didn’t know where to find food that tasted great and was raised naturally!

This is Jude taking a bath!

Our pig-raising adventures started when we finally got our permanent residency and started working for a company managing a kill plant.

We rented an acreage and I found a breeding pair of Berkshires and a cross-bred Berkshire.

Our pig herd increased when the guy working in the kill pen shouted

"Jo Jo, there is a really cute pig here"

We called her Jude, and rescued her and 4 Duroc gilts from the kill pens.

Then we bought a small white pig, that Carl thought looked like my sister Rachael - guess what it got called! Yes! Rachael!

When she had piglets one got named Lard - which is my sisters nickname! It's ok she doesn't mind having pigs named after her pr being called Lard - our niece and nephew call her Aunty Lard Ass and have done since they could talk.

Our small Farm in Saskatchewan was a total fluke find - a lady called me about some weanling Berkshires I had advertised, she lived here and after chatting for a while she said there was an acreage down the road from her for sale.

It was run down, but livable and had close to 30 acres that we could let our pigs free range on.

We were sold and have been raising our Berkshires out here since 2010!

About our Berkshire pigs

For over 12 years we have specialized in Pedigree Berkshire Pigs.

I absolutely love this breed. One of the oldest known pig breeds they thrive outdoors making them perfect for free-ranging, even with the extremes of the Canadian climate.

They are hardier and have more disease resistance than modern factory-farmed breeds which means we don’t have to feed anti-biotic laden feed to keep them healthy.

Most people think a pig is a pig and pork is pork and it’s all the same

that’s like comparing craft beer to commercial beer.

Our small herd of Berkshire pigs free ranges on 27 acres of pasture year round. We want them to live a stress-free life and one that allows them to breathe fresh air, wallow, root, sunbathe and play.
